The New York Post talks Veronica Roth and ‘Divergent’!

20130531-142136.jpg

Veronica Roth has attended this years Book Expo America to sign Allegiant posters yesterday and gave a speech at the Children’s Authors Breakfast today. I would say it has been very eventful for her the past few days.

The New York Post write an article about Veronica Roth and the upcoming film adaptation of her first best selling novel Divergent.

More than ever, publishers realize movie-ties can propel authors and their books into a whole new orbit.
Last night, Simon & Schuster gave attendees a sneak preview of the movie “City of Bones,” based on the first book in a series by Judith Rumelt, better known by her pen name Cassandra Clare. Some of the cast members from the movie — slated for late summer release — were expected to be on hand.
Veronica Roth is already beyond hot but could become the next young adult author to blast off into orbit.
The 24-year-old author is about to release her latest, “Allegiant,” her third novel published by HarperCollins. The first two, “Divergent” and “Insurgent,” have already sold a combined 3 million copies.
Harper Collins is cranking up the first printing of 2 million copies for “Allegiant,” due out in late October. (HarperCollins is owned by News Corp., which also owns The Post)
Roth’s first book will make its way to the silver screen in a Kate Winslet film from Summit Entertainment in March of next year.
Summit Entertainment is the same studio that turned the best-selling “Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins into a mega-hit in 2010.
Collins’ next book, “Year of the Jungle,” an autobiographical tome being written for Scholastic and due out later this year, is about her waiting for her father’s return from the war in Vietnam.
Many of the hottest books are now aimed at the young adult market. Roth’s trilogy centers around a crumbling society in a futuristic setting.
Roth took a quick break from autograph seekers yesterday at the Book Expo America at the Javits Center to chat with Media Ink.
“It’s been pretty incredible,” said Roth. “I certainly didn’t anticipate anything like this when I was writing my first book in my pajamas at my parent’s house,” she said.
It took four years to write the first book and she sold it to HarperCollins when she was still in college focusing on creative writing. Roth said it took her so long to write because “I had to find the right voice for the character.”
As for future movie deals, she said they are waiting to see how the first film is received.

The final book in the Divergent trilogy Allegiant, with be in stores on October 22nd and the Divergent film hits theaters on March 21st

Veronica Roth at BEA Day 2: Children’s Breakfast speech!

Yesterday Veronica Roth signed Allegiant posters for fans. Today Veronica Roth was a speaker at the Children’s Breakfast at Book Expo America today in New York. The speech that Veronica gave was very very inspirational.

Thanks to Divergent Examiner, we have the full speech transcribed.

Below are a few quotes from what she said:

The very act of studying books in school leads to humility because we’re taught from a very early age that the world is vast an unknown, that we will spend at least kindergarten through high school and hopefully beyond learning about the world and that one of the best places to do that is in books. And then we learned that books in themselves are mysterious. We can search them up, down and sideways for deeper meaning, and even when we read them for the first time, we don’t always understand everything that’s in them … which is why we write so many papers about them.

There’s nothing wrong with liking great feats of Classic Literature. Or with challenging yourself as a reader. But because I refused to read the books that got me really excited and enthusiastic about reading, I didn’t have any motivation left to challenge myself. I stopped reading completely.

Young readers are here to learn, and they are eager to be moved and engaged by a story, and when they like something, it’s generally not because it’s widely respected by academia – though it might be respected anyway – it’s because, pure and simple, they have discovered something that has moved and engaged them. And they aren’t dissuaded from loving it just because other people don’t.

Young readers can tell when an author is trying to force them to have a meaningful experience through preaching or manipulation. They can tell when a character doesn’t feel real or when a plot is contrived. Or when writing is clumsy. It’s important for everyone to learn how to spot those things, actually, and how to critique books.

And my favorite quote from her today:

Humility in reading and in writing really means freedom, freedom to love things with unbridled enthusiasm. Freedom to critique things thoughtfully, freedom to write about topics you aren’t that familiar with, freedom to admit to your mistakes and learn from them. Humility is freedom.

Zoe Kravitz one of Complex’s Hottest Women!

oqike_zoekravitz_593891

Zoe Kravitz (Christina) has made Complex‘s list for Hottest Women Right Now. Zoe takes the 49th spot right behind singer Rita Ora.

49. Zoe Kravitz

Occupation: Actress
Biggest accomplishment this year: Co-starring alongside Will and Jaden Smith in After Earth

While you may not know Kravitz especially well now (beyond her famous father Lenny), that isn’t going to last. She’ll be featured in the upcoming Smith family sci-fi film After Earth, but the name recognition will only start there. Next year, she’ll appear in the first chapter of the dystopian saga Divergent, a Hunger Games-esque series of popular young adult novels that will be the next big thing a year from now. In the interim, Kravitz also put out a line of jewelry earlier this year in collaboration with Swarovski, using entirely her own designs. It wouldn’t surprise us much if her father wears some of it, given his eclectic fashion sense.

You can see Zoe Kravitz as Senshi Raige in After Earth which hits theaters May 31 and in the film adaptation of Veronica Roth’s Divergent as Christina on March 21.

Word Wednesday – Beatrice Prior

wordwednesday (1)

Today is the first of many Word Wednesdays. Word Wednesday will consist of a quote from one of the characters in Divergent, Insurgent and soon Allegiant. Today’s Word Wednesday is a quote from Beatrice Prior from the first chapter of Divergent. I was inspired to use a quote from chapter one of Divergent from the 365 Days of Divergent challenge.

We walk together to the kitchen. On these mornings when my brother makes breakfast, and my father’s hands skim my hair as he reads the newspaper, and my mother hums as she clears the table-it is on these mornings that I feel guiltiest for wanting to leave them.

In this quote I feel that Tris knows that she does not belong. Not only in Abnegation, but among her family.
